The USGI
Cold Weather Pile Cap (officially designated as the Cap, Cold Weather,
Camouflage) is a legendary piece of extreme cold-weather headgear issued to
U.S. Army and Marine Corps personnel during the M81 Woodland era. Engineered to
combat freezing arctic and sub-zero temperatures, this cap is designed to be
worn standalone as a heavy winter hat or as a thermal liner beneath the classic
PASGT ballistic helmet.
It features an
iconic design with a soft, synthetic fur "pile" lining on the visor,
ear laps, and neck shield. When conditions turn brutal, the ear laps fold down
to completely encase the ears and chin, while the front visor can be flipped
down to act as a windbreak for the forehead.
In New
(Unissued) condition, these caps are factory-fresh deadstock. The inner
pile lining is exceptionally plush, clean, and fully lofted, and the Woodland
camouflage outer shell retains its deep, crisp factory coloring.

- Convertible Ear Laps: Feature a heavy-duty
hook-and-loop (Velcro) chin strap. Fasten it over the top of the crown in
milder weather, or secure it under the chin for full-face freeze
protection.
- Folding Front Visor: The thick pile-lined brim can be
flipped upward and secured flat against the crown or pulled down to
shield the brow from driving snow.
- Extended Nape Protector: The dropped rear panel extends
low past the neck line, seamlessly bridging the gap between your hat and
your winter parka collar.
- Low-Bulk Top: The top section of the crown
minimizes bulky seams, ensuring it fits comfortably beneath helmet
suspensions without causing painful pressure points.
